Plan ahead

Although motorcyclists riding in groups do not have any special rights, planning ahead to make sure all riders know the route and stopping points is essential. Other safety tips when riding in groups include:

  • Putting the most experienced rider at the front of the group and the second most experienced rider at the back
  • Breaking up larger groups into smaller groups to minimise speed variance and disturbance to other road users
  • When riding at the same pace as others, keep a following distance of at least three seconds and don’t compromise your space to ride in a formation
  • Creating a safe buffer zone away from oncoming traffic
  • Never riding side-by-side or any closer than three seconds from any vehicle
  • Not blocking other road users
