Centre for Road Safety

Framework for safety

To help improve their safety, all road users should be aware of the road rules. To improve your knowledge of the NSW Road Rules, detailed information can be found on the Transport for NSW website or call Service NSW on 13 77 88.

A fully updated version of the NSW Road Rules 2014, listing more than 300 separate rules, plus definitions, is available on the New South Wales Government legislation website.

Some road rules changes for NSW are based on changes to the Australian Road Rules, which have been determined at a national level.

Our road rules animations help clarify some common misunderstandings, including how to use roundabouts, when you can and can't use high-beam and fog lights, and when it is permitted to make a U-turn.

Laws for bicycle riders helps explain the road rules that apply to bicycle riders in NSW.
