Safer bicycle journeys

Our Cycling Safety Action Plan has been developed to help make bicycle riding a safer form of transport. The plan supports the goals of the NSW Road Safety Strategy 2012-2021 to reduce deaths and serious injuries by at least 30 per cent.

In the past decade, on average 11 bicycle riders have been killed on NSW roads each year. Our three-year plan includes actions to:

  • Build on the new "It’s a Two Way Street" campaign developed with the Amy Gillett Foundation to improve interaction between all road users
  • Develop a targeted cycling infrastructure safety improvements program
  • Trial vehicle activated road signs in selected areas that tell drivers when bicycle riders are approaching
  • Find ways to improve compliance and cyclist identification
